The idea of setting up a day to celebrate the earth was born from an environmental disaster that involved the United States in 1969 – the spill of oil from a Union Oil well – after which the democratic senator Nelson proposed the constitutional amendment “Every person has the inalienable right to a decent environment. The United States and every State shall guarantee this right.”
Inspired by this principle on April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, college campuses and hundreds of cities to protest environmental ignorance and demand a new way forward for our planet giving birth to the modern environmental movement.
Since that date, Earth Day is celebrated all around the world and recognized as one of the planet’s largest event. The results of the initiative over the years have been significant, from the first edition marked by the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States till 2016 when the historic Paris Agreement was signed. Earth Day Network’s mission is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide and it is currently working with more than 75,000 partners in over 190 countries to drive the positive action for our planet.
The theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action.
For this reason, on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the Reforce group responds to the call for a climate action launching its own “Green Manifesto”.
The aim is to take a clear position in the fight against climate change and contribute to raise awareness on the importance of sustainability and ecology. Our commitment has been translated into 5 main points, 5 small but impactful and concrete principles we integrate into our policy and in our daily lives to be actively part of the transition to a better world.
1. RAISE AWARENESS ON SUSTAINABLE ISSUES
Enhance the spread of high-quality information, to give a correct knowledge on issues such as climate change, environment and sustainability.
Most of the people today mainly gets their news from Internet, where unreliable and false information spreads wide negatively undermining our attitude towards important issues such as climate change and sustainability. We improve awareness-raising and offer insightful contents to provide accurate information which lead people towards concrete sustainable behaviours, choices and solutions.
2. PROMOTE ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY MOBILITY
Encourage the use of public or alternative means of transport to move around the city and to reach the workplace.
CO2 emissions from the transport sector continue to rise, particularly in big cities such as Milan, Turin or Rome. The scientific evidence of this worrying increase is irrefutable and to protect the air we breathe it is necessary to overcome the dependency on polluting cars as soon as possible.
3. SEPARATE WASTE COLLECTION
Recycle accurately to reduce our impact on the environment. Inadequate disposal of waste has a huge negative impact on the natural environment, while recycling responsibly conserves resources, saves energy and helps tackle climate change. We take great care in recycling properly every type of waste produced, from plastic bottles to the electronic components.
For an active commitment to a proper separation of waste, we support the circular economy reducing the use of plastic and using office supplies made of recycled material as much as possible.
4. SUPPORT CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND RECYCLED MATERIAL SUPPLIES
Cut down on consumption and use of disposable or plastic items whenever possible, provide plastic-free and reusable items in our office. We strongly believe the linear model, on which our economy is based on now, has to be replaced with a circular one, which creates more values and uses fewer resource. This systemic shift will positively affect the economy providing environmental and societal benefits too. In Reforce, we reduced the use of disposable or plastic items as much as possible, providing water cooler and stationery made of reusable material in every office.
5. TAKE SPECIFIC AND CONCRETE ACTION: “GREEN FRIDAY”
Reach our offices with public or alternative means of transport at least once per week: a small but impactful commitment to a great cause. Thanks to the initiative “Green Friday” we invite our employees to reach their offices by public or alternative means of transport every Friday, take a picture of themselves once they reach the workplace and share it on the social networks with the hashtag #GreenFriday.
Our manifesto is the framework to get actively involved in preserving our planet and we hope it can be an example for other businesses too.
Climate change is without any doubt the defining challenge of our society and the time is now to tackle it working together according to shared values and interest in our world and in our future.
Because everyone has the chance of being part of this and give concrete support in the struggle against climate change and environmental degradation.
